Beginner Tips

Here are a few things to just get you started:

1. Research the basics in your Academy.  Focus on things that help you do building construction and resource gathering.  Don't worry about the Defense track right away.  It won't do you any good because if you are hit by an enemy player they will likely wipe you out anyway.  If you want to help run wars, you could also focus a bit on the Military track to increase the speed of your marches and their effectiveness, but that should be something that you do more after you build up construction and resource gathering.  Don't worry about the Medicine, Sub City or Alliance track right now either.  They don't do that much good until you are ready to start PVP'ing or doing Boss Monster Alliance Wars (known as Rallies).

2.  Horses are the best against monsters.  So if you want to run wars, focus on horses.  Don't worry so much about ground troops, archers or siege machines unless you want to take over a Sub City.  It's just a waste of resources to build them right away.

The way combat works is, the computer runs each battle in rounds that take place at super fast speeds.  When a round begins, the fastest troops go first.  This is horses, and the fastest horses go first.  Horses are usually faster than monsters, so that's why they are so effective.  If you can kill a monster before it gets to act at all, you won't have any wounded troops.  If they get a chance to act, and your horses don't have good defense, that is when you may take a lot of wounded.

Archers are second fastest, so sending them with horses can help.  Depending on how much research you've done with archers, it will determine whether they can also act before the monsters you attack.  They also have good range, so the monsters will likely attack horses first since archers are usually too far away.

After Archers is Ground Troops.  They are usually pretty slow, and no matter how much you build them up, monsters will likely go first.  Monsters usually attack Ground Troops first, so they are actually the worst to send against monsters.  Siege machines have the best range and are the slowest, but because they can hit at a longer range they don't take as many hits as Ground Troops, even though they are slower.  However, if Sieges are alone, they will die quickly.

This being said, each unit is super effective against a particular type of unit.  Horses are super effective against Ground Troops, Ground Troops are super effective against Archers, Archers are super effective against Horses, and siege machines are just sort of support for all types of troops.  Everything is good against siege machines, but siege machines are really good when attacking cities.  So unless you are attacking a city, don't waste your siege machines on attacking something.

3.  Don't waste time on buildings that won't help you get your Keep level up at this particular time.  The Watchtower, Archer Tower, Prison, Statue near the Keep, the Temple, Art Hall...these types of buildings you should only build up right now if you have to in order to build up your Keep or another important building.  Most of these, again, are used for attacking other players or defending against them, and again, if you get hit by a bigger player they won't do a God-blessed thing for you.  You will lose everything regardless of how high you build these things up because most players are higher than you to start with.  Only if, by chance, someone of equal level to you tries to hit you will it do you any good at the moment.  Focus, instead, on Resource Generators, the Keep, the Walls, your Market and Warehouse, and maybe your Troop Generators, Embassy, War Hall and Rally Point if you want to help with running Boss Rallies.

4.  Don't be too quick to capture a Sub City.  Starting at like level 11, or somewhere around there, the game allows you to start capturing Sub Cities.  They are awesome to have, but when you try to take one over without the appropriate troops, and especially if you haven't done Medicine research to turn your killed troops into wounded troops, you will lose everything going up against a Sub City.  You will be ready to take one over once you have a good blend of all troop types, and you have the right level of these troop types.  You should also have, as I said, research done in Medicine so that you don't lose all your troops in the effort.  You can take over a Sub City, but it may still cost you thousands of troops to do it.  White Sub Cities are the weakest and easiest to take.  Try taking a White Sub City before you try taking any other color Sub City.  Green is the next level of difficulty, followed by Blue and then Purple and finally Gold.  Note:  Before trying to capture a Sub City, make sure you have an empty Sub City slot available.  Check your Sub City Menu, in the Main Menu (the menu with the 3 dots on the main screen).  It will tell you how many you have versus how many you can have.  This is a number such as 2/2 or 4/1.  If you try to capture one without an empty slot, you might win, but you don't get to keep it and you wasted your troops for nothing.

5. Join an Alliance.  It is much harder to level up after about Keep level 10 if you have no alliance.  In an alliance, you get lots of buffs and bonuses, and you can run Rallies together to get speedups and so forth.  There are a lot of benefits to being in an Alliance, and honestly, you won't get far without being in one.  Plus, the game isn't as much fun either.

6. Joining an Alliance War.  If an alliance member has started a rally, only send 1 Mounted troop (usually called a Cav or Horse) and a General.  Do not send any more than 1 Mounted troop unless the person who initiated the Alliance War asks for it.  If you do, you may cause your alliance member to suffer more wounded than they normally would, and you will only suffer lots of wounded as well.  You get the same rewards if you only send 1 Mounted troop and you don’t have as much healing.  If you can’t send 1 Mounted troop, send 1 Ranged troop.  They also do not cause an increase in wounded troops.  Note:  I have heard some say send 1 Siege with no General at all.  The only benefit of this is that the Siege will die (they don't get wounded), and there is no return march.  Therefore, you can join another rally more quickly using only 1 Siege.  However, sending 1 Siege doesn't give your General any experience, and it still might increase the wounded of your alliance member.  It may be a minimal increase to wounded, but I think it still increases it a little.

7. Tile Hitting.  Most servers have a rule that you should not attack someone who is on a resource tile.  This is called Tile Hitting.  Basically, if you select a Farm, Sawmill, Quarry or Mine and there is a red flag on it with an "x", someone is already on that tile.  They are farming it.  Your only option is to attack them or to cancel.  If you attack, your City's Protection drops and if you are strong enough you will kill the enemy and steal their resources.  If you aren't strong enough, you will die instead.  Either way, Tile Hitting is a good way to make people mad.  They will seek revenge on you right away, and on most servers they will report you to other alliances who will then all try to KOS you, which means they will Kill On Sight if they see you or anyone associated with you.

8.  Keep your Bubble Up.  The most important thing to do is keeping your City Protection (called Truce Agreement or Bubble) up.  Keep it up at all times unless you are PVPing.  As you read this guide, you will learn exactly why, so for more information, tips and tricks, start reading the others sections of this guide.
